History

In the late 17th century, during Africa's struggle and partition, The British acquire different protectorates in Africa in which Nigeria was inclusive. These Protectorates could not have National flags because they were divided along ethnic groups and religion. there was nothing symbolic to bond them together.
In 1914, Lord Lugard who was the first governor-general of the protectorate of Nigeria chose an emblem to appear in the colonial flag of Nigeria

Meaning of the Nigerian colonial flag

The six-pointed star refers to as the Seal of Solomon which was discovered in the year 1917, in Aguleri present-day Anambra State in Nigeria.

The royal crown is also called "Tudor' and the name "NIGERIA" appear within the star. After the independence of Nigeria, Nigeria adopted a new flag.

Who designed the Nigerian Flag?

Towards independence in 1958, there was a call for a competition to design and to select the Nigerian flag by the national planning committee. Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi a 23 years old Nigerian student in London designed the flag in 1959 and won the competition. Almost 3000 designs were submitted. The flag was adopted for the first time on October 1st, 1960 which is the independence day of Nigeria.

Nigerian flag is a bicolour, not a tricolour. it has two colours- Green and white. these colours were adopted because they represent what different parts of Nigeria has in common.
